AI tutor vs LMS: what does your institute need?

A learning management system organizes access to courses, activities and records. An AI tutor guides a learner through an explanation and responds to their answers. An institute may need both: the buying decision depends on whether the immediate problem is delivering the course or helping students understand it.

AI tutor vs LMS: where the roles differ

Imagine a student opening a course on linear equations. They can find the lesson, watch the recording and submit a quiz, yet still misunderstand why an operation must be applied to both sides. Improving the course menu will not address that particular difficulty. A teaching interaction needs to uncover the mistaken step and help the student try again.

Conversely, a useful tutoring conversation does not solve missing enrolments, inaccessible assignments or incomplete course records. The following table describes roles to evaluate, rather than a guarantee about every product. Some platforms combine several of them.

Choose around the problem your institute actually has

Write down the last five learner complaints. “I cannot find my assignment” points towards course delivery. “I watched the lesson twice and still cannot start the problem” points towards instruction. “My payment succeeded but I cannot access the course” needs an operational fix before any tutoring feature becomes useful.

If both delivery and understanding need work, scope them separately. Name who owns each change, how it will be checked and what a learner should be able to do afterwards. This keeps a pilot from becoming a broad platform migration with no clear teaching outcome.

For an institute with a working course platform, the first question is whether tutoring can fit the existing learner journey. For a new course business, administration and teaching may be evaluated together. Our guide to adding an AI tutor to a course covers the teaching choices in more detail.

Walk through a complete learning session

Use one reviewed chapter for the demonstration. Start as a newly enrolled student, open the assigned lesson, answer one question incorrectly and resume after leaving the session. Then switch to the teacher's view and check what information is available. Have an actual instructor interpret it without a vendor explaining every screen.

  1. Confirm the learner reaches the right material with the appropriate access.
  2. Check that the explanation uses the course's terminology and methods.
  3. Submit a plausible wrong answer and inspect the feedback.
  4. Complete a new question without tutor support.
  5. Use the resulting evidence to assign follow-up teaching.

The last two steps matter together. A completed conversation is useful operational information, but the independent question provides evidence of learning. A teacher also needs a manageable next action, such as revisiting balancing equations with a small group.

Questions to resolve before buying

  • Where does content live, and who reviews a revised lesson before students use it?
  • How are enrolment changes and withdrawn course access handled?
  • Does progress appear in your existing reporting workflow or a separate one?
  • Can teachers distinguish a correct first attempt from an answer reached with hints?
  • What happens when a student cannot use a microphone or has an interrupted connection?
  • Which connections are available today, and which would require additional implementation?

Compare the full cost of delivering support

Prepare a budget with separate lines for the course platform, tutoring usage, content review, staff training and any integration work. Use your expected learner participation, not total enrolment alone, to estimate tutoring demand. Check the estimate again using a busier revision week.

Include teacher time in the pilot record. A lesson that requires extensive correction has a different operating cost from a reviewed lesson reused successfully. Our AI tutor cost guide explains the budgeting variables; ask vendors to confirm their current terms for your scenario.

Where Tutezy fits

What we built for this

Tutezy provides interactive teaching from an institute's material inside the Vacademy learner experience. Read what Tutezy does and how a lesson works, then bring one chapter and your current course workflow to a demo. Confirm any connection to a separate LMS explicitly.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI tutor replace an LMS?+

Only if the product also meets your requirements for course administration, learner access, assessments and records. Teaching through a conversation does not by itself provide those functions. Check the complete workflow rather than the product label.

Do we need to replace our LMS to use Tutezy?+

Tutezy runs inside the Vacademy learner experience. If you use another LMS, confirm the access, content and reporting workflow with the team before purchasing; do not assume a native integration exists.

What should we measure in an AI tutoring pilot?+

Measure independent performance on new questions, unresolved learning gaps, content-review time and learner access problems. Compare those results with your existing course experience.
